Fragmentary collection of city publications, documents, and a 19th century partially disbound patient register. Publications are those of the Society of City Hospital Alumni, founded in 1891 and publications by St. Louis City agencies on the hospital and its governance. Publications of the Society of City Hospital Alumni are titled: Notices and programs of meetings, 1898-1899 & 1901; Those hospital days, 1911. City publications are titled: Hospital Department, St. Louis; Rules and Regulations for the government of the St. Louis city hospital, 1893. The patient register has a running title:"Patients admitted at Saint Louis City Hospital," The patient register, 1861-1866, is a fragment that begins with the year 1866 on page 200 and it continues with 1861-1865 beginning on p. 300). The patient register contains the following information on patients: name, age, birthplace, date of entry, ward, bed, disease, date of discharge or death, no. of days, remarks.

The origins of the St. Louis City Hospital date back to an ordinance of the city council on July 10 1845 to build a municipal tax-supported city hospital for the city's indigent poor. The original building for 90 patients was constructed between 1845-1846 on 8 acres in the city commons bounded by Soulard Street, west of St. Ann Avenue, Lime Street, and Lafayette avenue.
